Benefits of Journaling
There are so many benefits of journaling it's hard to know where to begin.
While I was completing my Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy, every single lecture without fail, I thought about journaling and how many benefits it has, especially to our mental health. You see, adversity doesn’t discriminate. Almost half of people in New Zealand will experience mental distress or illness in their lifetime (Mental Health Foundation 2022), and almost everybody knows of someone going through mental distress.
Although adversity doesn’t discriminate, help often does. Therapy is amazing and so beneficial, but it can come with a large price tag and even longer wait times. This is why we need to learn tools to support ourselves in times of challenge, change, and uncertainty.
Journaling is one such powerful tool that is accessible to almost everyone. It's not just about putting pen to paper; it's a journey (for lack of a better word) of self-discovery, a process of untangling thoughts and experiences that may have a tight grip on you.
Here are some compelling reasons why you would journal and the benefits of journaling:
Therapeutic outlet: Journaling provides a safe and private space to express your thoughts and emotions. Societal norms often encourage self-censorship. We quieten our fullest expression to fit in, keep the peace, or out of fear of disapproval. Your journal is a space you get to be honest and completely yourself.
Helps to process your emotions: Putting your thoughts on paper can help you gain clarity of your emotions and what's going on for you. It allows you to step back, reflect, and understand the root causes of your feelings, paving the way for emotional intelligence, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.
Improve your self-awareness & coping skills: Through consistent journaling, you may discover patterns in your thoughts and behaviours. You will begin to understand yourself better and increase your self awareness. This self-awareness is a crucial step towards growth and making positive changes in your life. With awareness comes choice and with choice comes change.
Decrease stress & anxiety: Writing about challenging situations can be cathartic. It helps release pent-up emotions and can be a healthy way to cope with stress. Journaling is also a mindfulness tool bringing awareness and presence to your day. It has been linked to reduced anxiety and improved overall mental wellbeing.
Problem-Solving: Writing can help you explore potential solutions. It encourages a proactive mindset, turning obstacles into opportunities, and allowing for creative thinking.
Helps you find meaning in your life: I’ve noticed that many people are clear on what they don’t want in life, but they’re often unsure about what they truly do want. That’s where journaling can be incredibly beneficial. It helps us dedicate time to asking the big questions, reflecting on what’s important and gaining clarity to what we truly desire.
In a world where the pace of life is relentless and external support isn't always readily available, journaling stands out as a simple yet profound tool for life. As you can see there are so many benefits to journaling. So, why on earth wouldn't you learn and practise this amazing tool.
